Students have worked on so hard this week! They learned about glossary, and using pictures to teach their readers. For glossary, they picked some important or hard words in their text and used one of kids dictionary website to find the definitions. Moreover, they also had opportunities to add a picture, a label, and a caption in their text. Next week, we will begin revising and editing. Lastly, student of this week was Nana! She will have 10 minute of free time next week when we get back. Way to go Nana!
Week 14: November 19th to November 23rd
This week was a short week due to Thanksgiving Holiday. Even it was a short week for everyone, students learned what an adjective is and how they can add adjectives into their writings. Students have finished their rough drafts. Next week, they will work on glossary, and then revising and editing afterward. I enjoyed watching them and their progresses that they had made so far. I am very excited to see their final products in December.
Week 13: November 12th to November 16th
This week, students had opportunities to read their books about their animals, as well as time to share one new interesting fact that they learned to their friends. Not only did they learn new facts about their animals, but they also learned their communication and community skills as well. In addition to, they have worked on writing their introduction, first table of contents, and the second table of contents. I am so proud of these second graders, because they worked really hard this week!
Also, congratulations to Huseen who was chosen as the student of this week! I chose him because his behaviors have improved from last week. Way to go Huseen!
Week 12: November 5th to November 9th
Second grades worked on so many things this week: table of contents, first introduction, visiting the library, and read their books. For visiting the library, they had a lesson about how to search their books using library catalog with Ms. Choo. This was a great learning opportunity for them and they all had great time! Students also worked on their first introduction which they can choose from three ways of starting their introduction: question, sound word, or brief interesting fact.
And, student of this week was Dalim! She was chosen this week because she showed her interests in writing her book as well as great communication skills. Congratulations!
Week 11: October 29th to November 2nd
This week, students learned how to plan for their writing using "Non-fiction text organizer." On their organizers, they had to write down the facts that they knew about their animals on their own words. Misspelling was totally fine at this phase, and I encouraged them to write as many facts as they know on this organizer. Moreover, students were also exposed to what would the readers want to learn from their texts. My questions to them were "What would your readers want to learn from your text?" and "How would you like to make your text interesting?" They had to keep these in their mind while they were writing their texts.
Week 10: October 23rd to October 26th
Term 2 has started and that means we are going to have a new piece of writing! In term 2, we will be focusing on "Non-fiction Text" or "Informational Writing." In this week, students had chances to explore some non-fiction texts as well as brainstorm their ideas/topics for their upcoming writing. Lots of students were interested in animals, as well as some objects. They chose their topics based on the items/objects/animals that they were expert at and they should be able to tell someone about their topic in their story as they write. Since this is only the beginning process of their non-fiction texts, they still have weeks until they publish their final product. I am super excited to see their final products at the end of term 2.
Also, congratulations to Mohammed! He was chosen as the student of this week and he was the first one who was allowed to play educational English games on Smart-table in our classroom!
