On Monday, students worked on their high-frequency words and played some games including "Go Fish" game. This game helped them to review the letters (both upper-case and lower-case) and its sounds as well. Also, we did not have an ELL lab on Wednesday due to the field trip! I hope all of them enjoyed their field trip.
Week 9: October 15th and October 18th
There were two main learning activities that we did this week! First one was "Run to the Board." We first shared and wrote things about "vacation" and each team had to write one ward to describe it. When they finished writing it on the board, they switch to their partners. There was 3-minutes of time limit which the team who had the most words win! In addition to, students had opportunities to pick two pictures or words that they want to use in order to create a sentence. They all came up with their sentences and I hope they all continue enjoying these activities! Great job students!
Week 8: October 8th Monday and October 10th Wednesday
Students this week had great time! First, since Halloween is coming up, they were making their own candy-corns and they had to write three things: favorite Halloween candy, Halloween costume, and favorite part of Halloween Day. Once they finished, they had time to share to each other. Moreover, on Wednesday, High School had their first "Hispanic Culture Celebration" so we all visited and they got to do one rotation where they draw some Latin countries' flags on their faces or arms. They also got to eat nacho chips! Fun fun!
Week 7: October 1st Monday and October 3rd Wednesday
Welcome back everyone! I hope you enjoyed your Chuseok break. I definitely enjoyed my break. I know that coming back to school after a long break could feel weird, but it's always good to be back and learn many new things with your friends.
Also, Halloween is coming soon! Therefore, in our lab this week, students were introduced with new vocabulary song that is a Halloween themed. I definitely think that learning a language through a song is engaging and fun for everyone! They also started creating their candy cone creativity about their favorite Halloween treats and the costume they plan to wear for this year's Halloween. We were all excited to see each other's costume on Halloween day! In addition, they were introduced with sight-words and then played sight-words bingo game. I highly recommend to help your children to study sight-words at home.
Week 6: Chuseok Break - No School
Week 5 - Part 2: September 19th Wednesday
As the students work on sight words (high-frequency words) throughout the lab time, we had a quick spelling quiz-time. As you can see the first picture below, once I said the word out loud, they need to write it on the white paper and raise it to show me. Then, I check if it's correct or incorrect. If it is incorrect, no worries, I give them a chance to re-write. Also, they learned about "verb" today. Verb is an action word that describe what people do. Once they learned it, students had a "charade" time. Charade is a body-game where they had to use their bodies to explain their action words- no talking. This was a fun game and good to see how all of them enjoyed.
Week 5 - Part 1: September 17th Monday
Today, they reviewed the short ending-vowels that begin with letter "I", "O", and "U." Afterward, they got to play the footprint game again with ALL of the ending-vowels they have learned in our lab. They had to listen to the word carefully, especially with the vowels. In addition, other activity was "Making a Sentence." Each team were allowed to pick 3 pictures and with those pictures, they had to come up with their own sentence and write it on the board.
Sentence from Mohammed and Yousif: I will get can and bottle. What I choose? Sentence from Nana and Dalim: We go to the shop and she buy the box.
It was a great lab time today for everyone!
Week 4: September 10th Monday
This week, they had one day of ELL lab due to the library day on Wednesday. Today, they reviewed the short ending-vowels that begin with letter "E." It seem like everyone enjoyed playing this game! It was a successful day for everyone :)
Week 3: September 3rd Monday and 5th Wednesday
This week, students fun time in our ELL lab! Continued from last week, they were able to review alphabets from "F to O." In addition to, each day they come in, they review sights words they need to know and then we started playing a "short vowels" game. This was a fun and engaging game that students were able to listen to the words and find out which short vowel-ending sounds it have, then they had to run and step on the footprint that has the ending sounds. We will continue this next week and after for awhile with different vowel-ending sounds.
Day 2: August 29th Wednesday
We began our classes using alphabet magnets to create words! Students were allowed to make any words that they want to and display it on the whiteboard to their peers. After they all created it, they shared their words or sentences then helped fixing some incorrect words. Today, they also reviewed letters with alphabet sounds using the song called "jolly phonics." Learning through songs is always a great way to engage students in or outside of the class. After they reviewed, they sang a song from "A to E" which we will keep continuing until the letter Z.
My goals for this year's ELL lab are:
Make a comfortable and warm learning environment for students
Motivate their confident in both learning and speaking English
Master phonics elements (e.g. alphabet sounds, short vowels, long vowels, blending sounds) and some sight words
These can be learned through many different types of activities in class. I hope you are supporting your child at home as well!
Day 1: August 27th Monday
Today was the first day of Fall season lab! Since it was our first day of lab, we started off introducing each other and go over some basic rules. To make students feel comfortable being here in the lab, students created "My Aloha Shirt." They had to think of themselves such as what their favorite subjects were, favorite sports, and animals, and then decorate their shirts like Hawaiian shirts. This fun activity required students' thinking, and writing skills where they had to show their characters to their peers in class. And here is the final product of their aloha shirts!
